Allianoi in Mysia

The ancient health resort of Allianoi is flooded today. It was near the village Paşaköy, 18 km northeast of Pergamon, today Bergama. The Turkish government had an irrigation dam built for the surrounding fruit and vegetable fields. And so Allianoi, barely partially excavated, came to lie 17 m below the water level.

The hot springs of Allianoi had a temperature of 45 to 50 °C.
By 2004, an area of 40,000 square meters had been uncovered. Excavation director Yaraş estimated this share at a maximum of 10 or 20 percent of the total area of the historic city area.

The bathing facility is about 2000 years old and measures over 10,000 square meters. The main road alone is 120 metres long. Also outside the excavation site, in the middle of the field, the archaeologists came across remains of the ancient settlement. The discovery of Allianoi gives a whole new meaning to the famous Pergamon. Who would have expected a second, large ancient settlement in the region?

One of the highlights of the excavations was an almost undamaged marble statue of a spring nymph, one and a half meters tall, which is interpreted as Aphrodite.

Various bathrooms were connected by a long underground water tunnel. They are unusually complete and well preserved, as large parts of the archaeological site were covered by alluvial soil. The hot springs of Allianoi have a temperature of 45 to 50 °C.
The most important building is the northern thermal spa, which covered an area of 9,700 square meters. Other structures discovered are bridges, marble streets, shops, public fountains, artistically decorated gates and houses with fully preserved coloured geometric mosaics from the Roman period.
Accommodation on the outskirts of the city, a basilica, chapels and necropolises are associated with the Byzantine era. Found objects were to be registered in rich number, so about several hundred pottery (oil lamps, tableware) and rare glass furnaces. All houses were connected to a water supply system. Among the found objects are sculptures, ceramics, metal, bones and glass objects and a large number of coins.
Another striking building is a hospital with an inner courtyard and colonnades, surrounded by interconnected treatment rooms. All rooms have an individual mosaic floor and an entrance to the colonnaded courtyard, in the middle of which once lay a fountain. The purpose of the building became evident in the antique medical instruments, a rarity in archaeology.
